Despite the fact that the Christmas holidays are now officially over, there is no time to relax. Two of the biggest events in confectionery storage and distribution are just around the corner – Valentine’s Day and Easter.
Need overspill storage for Valentines and Easter stock?
With Valentine’s Day kicking off in early February and the Easter period falling between March and April, the need for effective storage and distribution of products continues to grow as demand increases during this busy time.
Like most other food products, chocolate needs to be protected from a number of potential hazards including water and insect damage, as well as damage caused through mishandling or poor packaging.
Pick and pack staff should be made aware of the delicate nature of certain products, particularly when packing fragile items such as Easter eggs, which are hollow and vulnerable to breaking.
Despite chocolate having a fairly lengthy lifespan compared to other perishable food items, it still requires specialist storage facilities. Poor ventilation and temperatures that are either too hot or too cold within a warehouse can cause chocolate to ‘bloom’. This can alter the taste, texture and appearance of the chocolate which could then result in unsatisfied customers and batches of returned stock.
Temperature control is essential for any warehousing facility that stores certain foods and other perishable goods. Ideally, chocolate products should be stored in a cool and dry environment away from any strong odours as the ingredients in chocolate are susceptible to absorbing these odours and making the product unpalatable.
When transporting chocolate from the warehouse, vehicles should also be temperature controlled or at least properly insulated in order to maintain the perfect temperatures required, particularly when distributing goods over long distances or travelling through hot or cold countries.
Much of the packaging used in Easter and Valentine’s Day products is designed to be eye-catching in order to encourage consumers to buy the product. If part of the distribution process involves the products being packaged at the warehousing facility, then the right materials need to be used as the wrong packaging can also result in an ‘off’ flavour.
